Nikolai Church

Construction of St. Nicholas Church began around 1230 on a fieldstone foundation as a brick church. The first documentary mention occurred in 1257, with its consecration in 1312. In the 15th century, the church was extended with a choir and a bay of the nave to the west, complemented by a square tower. A special feature is the archway (Schwibbogen) beneath the choir, a street passage that remains preserved to this day. In 1703, a hurricane destroyed the originally slender, Gothic spire, which was replaced in 1706 by a pyramid roof with a Baroque lantern. During World War II, in the bombings of April 1942, the tower and nave completely burned out, and the nave's vault collapsed.
