Norwich Castle

Museum

In the English city of Norwich stands Norwich Castle, a Norman fortress. Originally conceived as a royal residence, it now houses a museum presenting historical artifacts and artworks.

History+

The origins of Norwich Castle date back to the Norman era. Similar to the Tower of London, the fortress was built with a central keep, surrounded by moats and walls. A feature is the 20-meter-high artificial mound, which the defeated Anglo-Saxons were forced to construct. The stone keep, completed around 1100, measures approximately 27 meters square and reaches a height of 20 meters. While the keep largely retained its original form, other parts of the buildings were significantly altered or destroyed. From the 14th century onwards, the complex served as a prison before being converted into a museum in 1894.
