In the city of Nyborg on Funen stands Nyborg Slot, a historic castle in Denmark. Originally built as a defensive structure, it evolved into a royal center.

History+

The origins of Nyborg Slot date back to around 1170. Duke Knud Prislavsen, a nephew of Valdemar the Great, had it built for protection against the Wends. Although the royal castle in Copenhagen became the center of power in Denmark from 1416, Nyborg remained a royal residence. The castle also served as an armory and granary. During the Count's Feud between 1533 and 1536, it was captured twice.
