The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The Agonal Obelisk, a Roman obelisk, rises above Bernini's Fountain of Four Rivers in Piazza Navona, Rome. Standing at 16.55 meters tall, it is an example of ancient craftsmanship, whose history is linked to Roman emperors and popes.

History+

Originally, the obelisk was crafted for Emperor Domitian's Temple of Isis, the Iseum Campense, which once stood where the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is located today. Contrary to a later inscription that names Caracalla as its bringer from Egypt, it was not imported as war booty but specifically created for this temple. At the beginning of the 4th century, Emperor Maxentius had the obelisk erected in his circus on the Appian Way.
