Oberburg Castle (Burg-Gräfenrode)

The Oberburg in Burg-Gräfenrode is the village's only remaining castle. Originally built in the Gothic style, it underwent alterations, giving it its current appearance, characterized by Renaissance and Baroque elements. Its pinkish-red paint, once mixed with oxblood, makes it an unmistakable structure in the Wetterau region.

The Oberburg was first documented in 1429 as the “Oberste Wonunge daz Steynen Huß mit Syme Begriff”. It served as the ancestral seat of the von Carben family until their lineage died out in 1729. Between 1550 and 1565, the originally Gothic complex was expanded in the Renaissance style, as indicated by the dates on two windows of the stair tower. In the 18th century, a Baroque redesign gave the building its current appearance, including the octagonal top and the Welsche Haube of the stair tower, as well as the slate mansard roof.
