Upper Castle Rheinbreitbach

The Obere Burg was originally a fief of the Cologne Abbey of St. Maria ad Gradus and was owned by a Junker von Lewendal. In 1655, ownership transferred to Dr. Adolf Bequerer and a few years later, through marriage, to Peter von Geyr. From 1730, it belonged to the von Buschmann family, and from 1829, to Johann Wilhelm Schmitz from Cologne, under whom the northern wing was extended. In 1907, the writer Rudolf Herzog acquired the castle, had it renovated in the Historicist style, and passed away there in 1943.
