Upper Castle Visegrád

Even in Roman times, the area around Visegrád was of military importance, when a fort was built here to secure the Danube border. After the end of Roman rule, various peoples such as Germans, Slavs, and Huns shaped the region. In the 10th century, Hungarian tribes settled, and in 1009, Visegrád was first mentioned in documents as a county seat. After the Mongol invasions in the 13th century, King Béla IV extensively expanded the castle. Charles I moved his residence to Visegrád in 1325, increasing the castle's importance. Even after the capital was moved to Buda in 1408, Visegrád remained an important place and was further developed. The castle reached its greatest splendor under Matthias Corvinus and his wife Beatrix of Aragon, who had it renovated in the late Gothic style from 1476 and expanded with a magnificent Renaissance palace. In 1544, the castle fell to the Turks, who largely destroyed it around 1685 during their retreat. Under Habsburg rule, the castle was blown up in the 18th century to prevent potential uprisings.

The Upper Castle of Visegrád is located in Visegrád, in Pest County, in the Central Hungary region of Hungary. It stands at an elevation of approximately 323 m above sea level.
