Upper Castle Geisingen

The Upper Castle Geisingen, also known as Kniestedt Castle or New Castle, is a castle in the Geisingen district of Freiberg in the Ludwigsburg district.

The site, located south of St. Nicholas Church, was already mentioned in 1356 as a farm of Bebenhausen Monastery. In 1361, the Lords of Stammheim bought the land from Knight Friedrich Sturmfeder, who held it as a Württemberg fief. In 1592, the building is mentioned as a Meierhof (manor farm) in the possession of the Schertlin von Burtenbach family, who had inherited the village after the extinction of the Lords of Stammheim in 1588. In 1720, it was bought by Friedrich Ludwig von Kniestedt, who also built the present castle with its half-timbered construction in 1723. In 1786, the castle was sold to Tobias Bender and in 1788 by him to Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg. In 1982, the city of Freiberg bought the castle grounds. The castle was renovated until 1987.
