Upper Castle (Gersfeld)
The Castle's History+
The castle (west wing) was built in the 14th century by the Lords of Ebersberg. The east wing was built between 1486-91. An expansion and renovation took place between 1605-08.
Architectural Features+
The castle combines elements of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. The impressive main tower, dating from the 15th century, is particularly noteworthy.
The Chapel
Inside the castle is a small, but richly decorated chapel. It contains frescoes from the 17th century, depicting scenes from the life of Saint George.
Current Use+
Today, the castle serves as a museum and cultural center. Regular exhibitions and concerts take place here. Parts of the castle can also be rented for private events.
Opening Hours
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Guided tours are offered daily at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
