In the Thuringian town of Greiz, the Upper Castle Greiz crowns a rocky spur. As a former seat of the Vögte of Weida and Plauen, and later the Reuss lords, it is a historically significant structure.

History+

The origins of the castle complex on the mountain cone date back to 1209 and 1225, when it was first documented. The castle served as a residence for the Vögte and later the Reuss lords. A lightning strike in June 1540 led to a fire, after which the complex was gradually rebuilt and redesigned. Between 1697 and 1714, a transformation into a comital residence took place, during which parts of the original fortifications were removed. In the 18th century, between 1733 and 1753, the lower castle courtyard acquired its late Baroque appearance through new constructions and additions.
