Upper Castle Mitwitz

The original construction of the Upper Castle Mitwitz is dated to the late Middle Ages, specifically the 14th or 15th century, based on its vault forms. The first known owners were likely the Lords of Schaumberg until 1425, followed by the Lords of Rosenau. During the Thirty Years' War, between 1631 and 1634, the castle was severely damaged by fire during conflicts between Kronach and Mitwitz, leaving only the cellar and parts of the ground floor intact. In 1713, the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style according to plans by Carlo Domenico Lucchese, commissioned by Johann Ludwig von Würtzburg. The noble line of the Würtzburgers ended in 1922 with Imperial Councillor Ludwig Freiherr von Würtzburg, after which ownership passed to the Cramer-Klett family.
