Upper Castle Adelsheim

The Oberschloss was built in 1504 by Sebastian von Adelsheim next to a moated castle that had existed since the 14th century, as the second castle of the Lords of Adelsheim.

The moated castle, which was probably built in the first half of the 14th century, was destroyed in 1523 by the Swabian League. The Oberschloss was spared. In 1590, the Oberschloss was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. In 1616, the castle was expanded to include the "New Building".

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was plundered and devastated several times. In 1630, the castle was occupied by imperial troops, and in 1646 by French troops. After the war, the castle was rebuilt and expanded. In 1700, the castle chapel was built.

In 1806, Adelsheim became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. The Oberschloss remained in the possession of the Lords of Adelsheim. In 1860, the castle was extensively renovated and modernized. In 1960, the castle was sold to the city of Adelsheim.

The Oberschloss is a four-winged complex with a courtyard. The main building is a three-story plastered building with a hipped roof. The facade is structured by corner quoins and window frames. The main entrance is located on the west side and is designed as a portal with a coat of arms.

The castle chapel is located on the east side of the complex. It is a small, rectangular building with a saddle roof. The interior is decorated with frescoes from the 18th century.

Today, the Oberschloss houses the Adelsheim City Museum. The museum presents the history of the city and the castle. Various exhibitions and events are also held in the castle.
