In Radolfzell am Bodensee, the Austrian Palace now serves as the city library. Its history is linked to the political upheavals of the Thirty Years' War.

History+

The origins of the palace date back to 1619, when construction began on the site of two medieval canon houses. Parts of the existing building fabric were integrated. The palace was planned as a city residence for Archduke Leopold V of Austria. However, construction had to be interrupted as early as 1621 due to the effects of the Thirty Years' War. The unfinished building, of which the vaulted cellar, ground floor, enclosing walls, and portal were already in place, then served as a wine cellar and storage for decades.
