Titelberg Oppidum

The Oppidum can be visited

The Oppidum Titelberg in Petange, Luxembourg, is an impressive testament to ancient settlement. Situated on a distinctive plateau mountain, it was once a significant center for the Celtic Treveri tribe and later a Roman vicus. Its strategic location and preserved fortifications make it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.

History+

The settlement of Titelberg dates back to the Iron Age, featuring early, two-phase section fortifications. Titelberg experienced its heyday in the last century BC and the first quarter of the 1st century AD as a fortified town (oppidum) of the Treveri. It developed into the most important political and economic center in the western part of the tribal territory. Around 30 BC, renovations and new constructions took place, possibly in connection with the Treveri uprising. After the Roman conquest and the founding of Augusta Treverorum (Trier), Titelberg gradually lost its importance from 20 BC onwards but remained inhabited until the first decades of the 1st century AD. In the second half of the 1st century AD, a provincial Roman village (vicus) was established here, which existed until the 5th century AD. In modern times, iron ore was mined on Titelberg, which, while unearthing archaeological finds, also partially altered the original topography.

The Oppidum Titelberg is located on a plateau mountain approximately 382 meters above sea level in the municipality of Petange, in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, within the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
