In Darmstadt, in the Bessungen district, stands the Orangerie Bessungen, a small palace that originally served as winter quarters for exotic plants. The structure is distinguished by its baroque architecture and the surrounding park.

History+

The building was constructed between 1719 and 1721 according to the designs of architect Louis Remy de la Fosse. Its purpose was to house orange trees from Sardinia or Sicily during the cold season. The structure was built as an eleven-axis building, featuring a two-story hall facing south, flanked by single-story rooms.
