The Teutonic Order Castle of Liebstedt in the Weimarer Land is a historical structure in Thuringia. It is considered the only largely completely preserved castle in Germany and the only existing Teutonic Order castle in Europe built directly on a road, maintaining its original character as a transit castle.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to the 10th century. It was built as a lowland castle with a moat on the medieval Copper Road, which connected Jutland with Venice and led travelers through the castle. In 956, Otto I gifted the locality “Libenstete” to Quedlinburg Abbey. After changing hands, including the monasteries of Pforte and Hersfeld and the Landgraves of Thuringia, the castle came into the possession of the Teutonic Order in 1331. They established a commandry here, which included Liebstedt, Goldbach, and Wohlsborn.
