The Ouvrage de Schoenenbourg is an impressive fortress in Alsace, France. As part of the famous Maginot Line, built in the 1930s, it is one of the few of its kind accessible to the public, offering deep insight into the military architecture of that era.
History+
Construction of the Ouvrage de Schoenenbourg, a medium-strength artillery work, began in 1930 and was largely completed by 1933. The interior fittings and armament were installed by 1935 and continuously improved in subsequent years. Most areas of the fortress lie 17 to 30 meters underground, with only the two entrances and combat bunkers visible on the surface. The facility housed a garrison of approximately 510 to 630 men, including infantrymen, artillerymen, and engineers, commanded by Major Reynier in 1939/40. The fortress was equipped with various weapons, including 4.7 cm anti-tank guns, twin machine guns, and 7.5 cm howitzers in retractable armored turrets and infantry casemates.
