Royal Palace Wrocław

The oldest part of the palace was built in 1719. After the First Silesian War, when Silesia fell to Prussia, King Frederick II acquired the palace in 1750. Between 1751 and 1753, it was expanded with a southern transverse wing according to plans by Johann Boumann. Later, in 1796/97, Carl Gotthard Langhans added a long southwestern wing, which extended to the fortification and contained, among other things, royal chambers. A significant historical event was the establishment of the Iron Cross by King Frederick William III in 1813 in this palace, from where he also called for the fight against Napoleon. After the demolition of the city fortifications, the palace was redesigned in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style, with Friedrich August Stüler rebuilding the courtyard of honor between 1858 and 1868 and adding large classical side wings. During World War II, parts of the palace burned down, and in the 1950s, several wings were demolished. An extensive renovation between 2010 and 2012 restored many areas, with the baroque garden and the exposed rear of the central building emphasizing its original appearance.

The palace is located in Wrocław, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship (Dolnośląskie) in the Południowo-Zachodni region of Poland, at an elevation of approx. 134 m above sea level.

Today, the former Royal Palace serves as a museum and is accessible to visitors. It houses the City Museum of Wrocław.
