History+

The origins of Palais Attems date back to the period between 1687 and 1702, when Ignaz Maria Graf Attems, the founder of the Graz line of the Attems family, acquired six townhouses. These formed the basis for the construction of a city palace, for which architect Johann Joachim Carlone was commissioned. Construction lasted from 1702 to 1716, with Carlone working until 1705 and reportedly drawing inspiration from Genoese models. Count Ignaz Maria Attems had the interior of the palace furnished and began to assemble a private art collection including paintings, weapons, tapestries, and a large library. Through a family entail, the palace was always inherited by the firstborn son.
