Palais Auersperg

The construction of the Palais took place between 1706 and 1710 on the foundations of the former Rottenhof. The plans were drawn by the renowned architects Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, commissioned by Hieronymus Capece de Rofrano. Johann Christian Neupauer carried out a significant redesign of the central part between 1720 and 1723. Court stonemason Elias Hügel used hard Kaiserstein for the grand staircase and columns. In 1759, Joseph Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen rented the Palais, engaging Christoph Willibald Gluck to direct his house concerts. From 1777, the property belonged to Johann Adam Fürst Auersperg, a confidant of Francis Stephen and Maria Theresa. Under his patronage, socially significant musical events took place here from 1786, including performances of works by Mozart and Haydn. After several changes of ownership within the Auersperg family and a period during which Prince Wasa resided there, a ballroom was built on the garden plot in 1864, but it was severely damaged during World War II and had to be demolished. During World War II, the Palais served as a hiding place for resistance fighters and was the founding site of the “Provisional Austrian National Committee” (O5). After the war, it was used by the Inter-Allied Military Police. In 1953, Consul Alfred Weiß acquired the Palais, converting it into a coffee house with event rooms. After his death, the Palais changed hands several times.

Palais Auersperg is located at Auerspergstraße 1 in the 8th district of Vienna, Josefstadt, in the city of Vienna, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 188 m above sea level.

Today, Palais Auersperg serves as a versatile venue for cultural events and houses a museum. It features eleven halls and can accommodate up to one thousand people. While the state rooms have retained their original condition, office spaces have been created on the upper floor.
