Bechtolsheim Palace
The Palais Bechtolsheim, located in the western old town of Eisenach, was the representative residence of the Vice-Chancellor of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, who resided in Eisenach. It is considered the oldest preserved neoclassical building in the city.
The so-called Chancellor's Palace or Palais Bechtolsheim at Jakobsplan 9 bordered directly on the northwestern section of the city wall. It was presumably built in the late 1780s, incorporating parts of a baroque predecessor building.
The most significant owner was Vice-Chancellor Johann Ludwig Freiherr von Mauchenheim genannt von Bechtolsheim (1725-1806), who was Duke Carl August's deputy, making him the highest-ranking state official in Eisenach. Goethe was also a guest in this house several times for state affairs and on his travels. In the 19th century, the palace passed into the possession of the industrialist Streiber family. It again served as a representative residence. During the Nazi dictatorship, the Eisenach SA had domicile in the building; the building survived the end of the war undamaged. Immediately expropriated and nationalized during GDR times, it temporarily housed the city library and the municipal housing administration; the Eisenach branch of the Goethe Society also has its meeting point here. Today it serves as an office building for the municipal housing administration.
Architectural Features+
The building was originally a three-winged structure; the northern wing no longer exists. The two-story central building and the south wing underwent extensive restoration in the 1990s, during which numerous architectural details inside the building were examined and secured. In the mostly representatively designed rooms, one finds a wide range of stucco ornaments; the associated paintings, furniture, stoves, and other furnishings, however, have not survived the test of time. The northern, no longer existing wing formerly had an arcade-like passage to the adjacent garden.
