Bechtolsheim Palace

The construction of Palais Bechtolsheim took place in the late 1780s, incorporating parts of an older Baroque building. It served as the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, Johann Ludwig Freiherr von Mauchenheim called von Bechtolsheim, who acted as Duke Carl August's highest-ranking state official in Eisenach. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was also a guest here on several occasions. In the 19th century, the palace passed into the possession of the industrialist Streiber family and maintained its function as a residence. After World War II, which the building survived undamaged, it was expropriated and, during the GDR era, housed the city library and the municipal housing administration, among others. The Eisenach branch of the Goethe Society also used it as a meeting point.
