Palais Bretzenheim

District Court of Mannheim

In Mannheim, directly opposite Mannheim Palace, lies the Palais Bretzenheim. Originally built as a residence for the children of Elector Carl Theodor and his mistress, it is a prominent example of the city's noble palaces.

History+

Between 1782 and 1788, the Palais Bretzenheim was constructed according to designs by court architect Peter Anton von Verschaffelt. Elector Carl Theodor had it built for his four children with Josepha Seyffert, who was later elevated to Countess of Heydeck. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is said to have given piano lessons to the children here.
