The main wing was constructed between 1703 and 1714, commissioned by Friedrich Gerhard von Lünenschlos, a professor at Heidelberg University. The building's design is attributed to the architect Johann Jakob Rischer. In 1763, the property passed into the possession of Baron Hugo von Helmstatt. After several changes of ownership, Professor Heinrich Buhl acquired the palace in 1889 and later bequeathed it to Heidelberg University.
