Palais Coburg

Construction of the Palais Coburg began in 1839, commissioned by Ferdinand Georg August of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld-Koháry, based on plans by architect Karl Schleps. Following Schleps' death in 1840, master builder Adolph Korompay oversaw its completion in 1845. The building plot came into the possession of the Coburg family through Ferdinand's marriage to Maria Antonie Gabriele of Koháry. Although the palace remained uninhabited until 1848, August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Clementine d’Orléans moved in in 1849. They used parts as a tenement house and furnished the state rooms with insignia of the French royal family and the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
