The Palais des Académies in Brussels is an impressive neoclassical edifice that once served as a princely residence and now houses the Royal Academies for Science and Arts of Belgium.
History+
Between 1823 and 1828, Prince William of Orange commissioned the construction of this palace in the neoclassical style, complemented by elegant stables. From 1828 to 1830, he resided in the Palais with his consort Anna Pavlovna, a sister of Russian Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I. However, the Belgian Revolution in 1830 forced the House of Orange to flee to the Netherlands. Consequently, the Palais was under the administration of the newly formed Belgian state from 1830 to 1839.
