Palais des Rois de Majorque

The Castle can be visited

In Perpignan, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca is a residence that once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca. This complex combines the functions of a palace and a fortress.

History+

The palace's history began in 1276 when King James II of Majorca declared Perpignan the capital of his kingdom. He commissioned the construction of the palace with gardens on the Puig del Rey hill south of the town. Architects Ramon Pau, Pons Descoll, and Bernat Quer completed the work in 1309. The palace played a role in 1415 when Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg organized a European summit there. The goal was to persuade the Avignon Antipope Benedict XIII to resign and end the Western Schism through the Council of Constance.
