Deutschordenshaus Palace

Seat of the Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) Landtag

In Mainz, the Palais Deutschordenshaus today houses the Parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. This baroque edifice on the banks of the Rhine is one of the secular buildings in the former Electorate of Mainz.

History+

The foundation stone for the Deutschordenshaus was laid in 1730 by Franz Ludwig von der Pfalz, who at the time was both Archbishop of Mainz and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. He intended to construct an additional official residence for his role as Grand Master, alongside his archiepiscopal residence, the Electoral Palace. The completion of the palace, designed by Anselm Franz Freiherr von Ritter zu Groenesteyn in the French Baroque style, occurred in 1737. The building was furnished with the involvement of Christoph Thomas Scheffler and the Castelli family. Franz Ludwig von der Pfalz did not live to see its completion.
