Palais Dietrich

Prince Leopold commissioned the Palais Dietrich between 1747 and 1752 for his son, Dietrich of Anhalt-Dessau. Following Prince Dietrich's death in 1769, the building passed into the possession of Prince Franz. From 1777, he made parts of the palace available to the Philanthropinum, which fully utilized the residence from 1780 to 1793. Subsequently, Princess Henriette Amalie, Dietrich's sister, resided in the palace for one year. After her passing, the building housed the Amalienstiftung, named after her, though its painting collection could only be accommodated on the upper floor after 1815. Around 1820, the roof and facade underwent structural changes. In 1927, after the paintings were moved to the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie, the upper floor was converted into apartments. As one of the few historical buildings, the Palais Dietrich survived World War II almost undamaged.
