Luxembourg Palace

The construction of the Palais du Luxembourg began in 1615 at the behest of Queen Marie de' Medici, mother of Louis XIII. She desired a widow's residence in the Florentine style, inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Architect Salomon de Brosse oversaw the construction, which lasted until 1620. Although Marie de' Medici lived in the palace only briefly, having been exiled in 1617, the building has had a eventful history. After her final departure in 1630, it served as a residence for various members of the royal family. In 1750, a portion of the royal painting collection was publicly exhibited there until the exhibition closed in 1779. During the French Revolution, the palace was confiscated, used as an arms factory, and later as a prison. Around 1800, Jean-François Chalgrin undertook a renovation to transform it into the seat of the Senate. In the 19th century, the palace was significantly expanded and has continuously served as the seat of the French Senate since 1852.
