Palais Erzherzog Carl Ludwig
The Palais Erzherzog Carl Ludwig is located in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden, at Favoritenstraße 7.
In 1780, Franz Freiherr von Prandau had a baroque castle built by Adalbertus Hild. In 1799, the architect Franz Wipplinger extended the building with two side wings, creating a courtyard of honor, and with a street-facing wing. In 1864, the street-facing wing was extended by a second floor and stables were built. In 1865, Archduke Carl Ludwig bought the palace and had it redesigned in 1872–73 by Heinrich Ferstl under the construction management of Eduard Frauenfeld. The street-facing wing of the palace was destroyed during the Second World War and demolished after the war, replaced by a modern building.
Description+
The courtyard-side facade of the transverse wing is structured by a flat central risalit. A portico with a balustrade is placed in front of the risalit's plinth floor. A segmental arched gable with the coat of arms of Habsburg-Lorraine crowns the central risalit. The high roof zone is structured by an attic balustrade with putti and, additionally on the side wings, with dormer windows. All wings feature a banded plinth zone with rectangular windows with keystones. The windows on the bel étage have straight window pediments, with the exception of the window in the central axis which has a segmental arched pediment, layered lintel fields, and simple decoration in the parapets.
The garden side of the palace is also characterized by a central risalit with a balcony, but otherwise rather simple decoration. The balcony room inside has a wooden ceiling in Neo-Renaissance style. The Great Hall is equipped with Stuccolustro technique and a beautiful mirrored ceiling with stucco in the style around 1700. In the spandrels, there are allegories of the four elements, putti in the central fields, and reclining female figures in the oval fields.
