Görtz Palace

Palais Görtz was built starting in 1710 according to plans by the Hamburg architect Johannes Nicolaus Kuhn for the envoy Georg Heinrich von Görtz. Upon its completion, it was considered an outstanding structure, surpassing the more modest bourgeois houses common in Hamburg at the time. A unique feature was the three-aisled entrance hall, a motif originating from Italy, which Kuhn implemented for the first time in Hamburg here. Originally constructed with brick, the palace received its current appearance in 1776 when it was plastered. After Görtz's execution in 1719, the building served as the residence of the imperial envoy from 1722 to 1806. During the French occupation from 1811 to 1814, it was used as a Mairie (town hall). From 1814, it became part of the Stadthaus complex, housing Hamburg's administration and police, and later the Hamburger Sparkasse. Severely damaged in World War II in 1941 and 1943, a simplified reconstruction was carried out by Carl-Friedrich Fischer starting in 1953, with the street-facing parts being rebuilt. The building has been a protected monument since 1928.

Palais Görtz is located in Hamburg, in the city district of Hamburg-Mitte, at an elevation of approx. 14 m above sea level.

Today, Palais Görtz is used as an office building. It is a reconstructed structure whose exterior appearance is based on its historical state, while the interior has been modernly designed.
