Palais Grand-Ducal

The site of the current palace was originally home to Luxembourg's first town hall, which was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1554. Twenty years later, a new town hall was built on the same spot. In 1728, it was renovated and expanded in 1741. During French rule, the building served as the headquarters of the Département Forêts. From 1817, it was the residence of the representative of the Dutch King-Grand Duke in Luxembourg. An extensive interior renovation took place in 1883 for the visit of King-Grand Duke William III and his consort Emma. The Chamber of Deputies was added in 1859. Since 1890, with the succession of the House of Nassau-Weilburg, the building has served as the Grand Ducal Palace. Under Grand Duke Adolph I, the interior was again extensively renovated, and a new wing designed by Gédéon Bordiau and Charles Arendt was added. During the German occupation in World War II, the palace was used by the National Socialists as a concert hall and tavern, during which many furnishings and artworks were damaged or destroyed. After Grand Duchess Charlotte's return from exile in 1945, it served as the seat of the Grand Ducal Court. In the 1960s, the palace was refurnished, and between 1991 and 1996, it was fully restored; since then, the interior has been regularly renewed.

The Palais Grand-Ducal is located in the city of Luxembourg, in the canton of Luxembourg, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, at an elevation of approx. 301 meters above sea level.

Today, the palace serves as the city residence of the grand ducal family of Luxembourg. It is the venue for official acts and receptions of foreign heads of state. The Grand Duke, his consort, and staff have their offices here.
