Diocesan bishop
Johanniter-Kommende Palais

The palace was first mentioned in a document in 1278. The present building was erected from 1740 to 1748 by the architect Johann Kaspar Bagnato with the participation of Anselm Franz von Ritter zu Groenesteyn. Until 1792, the palace served as the residence of the French envoy. From 1813 to 1814, a French artillery school was housed in the building. Until 1918, the palace was the seat of the Engineering Directorate of the Mainz Fortress. From 1930, it was used by the Franciscans. During the Second World War, a side wing burned out and was rebuilt in 1954. Since 1969, the palace has served as the episcopal ordinariate.
