History+

The origins of Palais Khuenburg date back to the Middle Ages, when the property belonged to the Reinerhof, owned by Rein Abbey. After 1564, Maximilian von Schrattenbach, chamberlain to Archduke Karl and governor of Styria, had a townhouse built here. He was elevated to the rank of baron in 1598. Around 1630, the estate changed hands to Count Otto Ehrenreich Trauttmansdorff and later to Johann Sebastian Schäzl, who sold it to Sigmund Ludwig Khuenburg in 1676. Count Gandolf von Khuenburg commissioned a redesign into a noble palace in 1690. In 1738, the Palais passed to Count Joseph Dismas von Dietrichstein through an exchange, who had the stables expanded. His son, Franz Dismas von Khuenburg, also acquired the neighboring Reinerhof in 1789.
