Palais Levetzau

The site of the current palace was originally home to a pleasure palace built by King Frederick III for his consort Sophie Amalie between 1669 and 1673. This palace, named after Sophie Amalie's second name, was completely destroyed in 1689 by a devastating fire that originated from a neighboring theater. Subsequently, the area within Copenhagen's city walls lay fallow until the early 18th century, when a small pavilion was created in a French garden under Frederick IV. In the mid-18th century, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the House of Oldenburg, Frederick V planned an extensive urban expansion. Under the direction of court architect Nicolai Eigtved, the new Frederikstaden district began to take shape from 1749, with an octagonal square at its center, surrounded by four noble palaces. Palais Levetzau, built for Count Levetzau, was completed in 1760. After the devastating fire at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen in 1794, the royal family acquired Palais Levetzau and subsequently used it as a residence, including for Christian VIII and Christian X.

Palais Levetzau is located in the Danish capital Copenhagen, in the København district within the Hovedstaden (Capital Region), approximately 12 meters above sea level.

Today, Palais Levetzau houses a museum dedicated to the Danish royal family, featuring regularly changing exhibitions. It also serves as the city apartment for the Princes of Denmark.
