Meran Palace

The construction of Palais Meran took place between 1841 and 1843 under the direction of Georg Hauberisser the Elder. It served as a residential palace for Archduke Johann, who had acquired the property in 1834 and freed it from previous encumbrances. The Archduke passed away in this residence in 1859. The palace was named in honor of his son, Count Franz von Meran, who received this title in 1844. The building underwent several expansions, initially with a north wing in 1880, followed by further additions in 1939 and 1963. Since 1963, the Palais has been home to the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
