Palais Morass
The Palais Morass is a Baroque palace located in Heidelberg's Old Town, built in 1712. Today, it houses the Palatinate Museum of the City of Heidelberg.
The Palais Morass owes its name to its builder, the jurist Johann Philipp Morass, who was Rector at the University of Heidelberg in 1700/1701. He had the palace built in 1712 on the site of the building named "Elende Herberge," which was used as a poor hospital until 1693.
Architecture+
Both the facade and the interior design were built in the style of the time, the Baroque. The interior design of the ballroom on the first floor has been styled in the Louis XVI taste since a renovation in 1778.
The eye-catcher of the palace's Baroque facade is its architectural design, adorned by two columns with Corinthian capitals on each side, flanking the arched portal, upon which the balcony of the bel étage seems to rest. Within the passage from the entrance portal to the inner courtyard of the palace and the adjoining garden, one reaches the upper floors of the property via an open, Baroque staircase on the right-hand side.
Usage+
Since 1906, the Palais Morass has housed the Palatinate Museum with the art collection of the City of Heidelberg. The Heidelberg Art Association was established in a modern annex of the palace within the garden area, adjacent to the inner courtyard of the property.
