In Düsseldorf-Karlstadt, the Palais Nesselrode is a historic residence with a three-part layout. Originally designed as a double house, it forms a courtyard open to the street, a rare feature in Düsseldorf. Today, the rebuilt palace houses a museum.
History+
The Palais Nesselrode once belonged to the Count of Nesselrode zu Ehreshoven. During the Napoleonic era, when Düsseldorf was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Berg, it served partly as the prefecture of the Rhine Department in 1809. During the Wars of Liberation, the Danish army corps used the palace as its headquarters. Later, the city of Düsseldorf acquired the building and had it renovated. Although damaged in World War II, it was rebuilt and is now a protected monument.
