Palais Neue Favorita

The origins of the estate date back to 1288, when a manor house existed on this site. In 1614, the imperial house acquired the court along with its lands. From 1623, it became known as Favoritenhof and served as a widow's residence for several empresses. Between 1642 and 1683, it was converted into a pleasure palace named Favorita, based on plans by Giovanni Battista Carlone. It became the preferred summer residence for Emperors Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI, during which time extensions were made and damages from the Second Turkish Siege of 1683 were repaired. Maria Theresia, Charles VI's daughter, later preferred Schönbrunn Palace as her summer residence and handed over the now-called Neue Favorita to the Jesuits. She commissioned the establishment of a knight's academy for the education of the nobility, particularly for civil servants and diplomats. After its dissolution by Joseph II in 1783, the academy was reopened in 1797 under Emperor Franz II, and the facade was redesigned in a neoclassical style. Emperor Franz Joseph I also allowed sons of the bourgeoisie to attend after 1848. Following the “Anschluss” in 1938, the academy was dissolved by the National Socialists and converted into a National Political Education Institute. During World War II, the complex suffered severe damage and was used by the Soviet occupation forces after 1945. In 1955, it was returned to the Austrian state, and in 1957, school operations could resume. Since 1964, the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna has also been housed in part of the buildings, and since 1989, girls have also been admitted to the secondary school.

The Palais Neue Favorita is located in Vienna-Wieden, in the federal state of Vienna, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 184 m above sea level.

Today, the Palais Neue Favorita houses a secondary school. The complex thus continues to serve as an educational institution and is used and accessible accordingly for school operations.
