Podewils Palace

In the last months of the war, the building was destroyed down to its foundations. It was rebuilt between 1952 and 1954, with the facade largely restored to its original Baroque form, but the roof was executed as a simple gabled roof. However, the reconstruction materials are not contemporary; reinforced concrete was used for the building ceilings, and the interiors were rearranged for use during GDR times.

In February 1966, a fire broke out after an event, again destroying the ballrooms and roof structure. During the subsequent reconstruction, the historic double hip roof of the pre-war variant was restored.

After its reconstruction, it served as the "Central Club House of the FDJ," and from 1976 to 1991 as the House of Young Talents (HdjT). In addition to a large hall for concerts and other event rooms, about 40 groups worked here in various fields such as cabaret, dance, pantomime, photography, and painting/drawing.

After the closure of the House of Young Talents, the building was extensively renovated again and reopened a year later as Podewil. The Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH used it as an event venue and a working and production house for artists. From 2005 to 2007, the house was operated by TESLA-berlin e. V. With the relocation of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden to the Schillertheater for the duration of its renovation (expected until 2011), the Grips-Theater will use Palais Podewils as a second venue from February 25, 2009, as its previous location in the workshop of the Schillertheater will be closed as part of this move. The palace is now a listed building.
