Roskilde Palace
In Roskilde city on the Danish island of Zealand stands Palais Roskilde, a former royal castle. It is an example of 18th-century architecture.
History+
On the site of the current Palais Roskilde, a bishop's palace had already stood since the Middle Ages. King Christian VI commissioned the replacement of this predecessor building, and thus the new castle was constructed between 1733 and 1736. The estate played a role in 1807 when it served as headquarters for General Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, during the English siege of Copenhagen.

Today, Palais Roskilde houses local authorities and part of a museum. Since 1924, a section of the building has also served as the residence for the Bishop of Roskilde.
