Palais Schaumburg

Chancellor's Office

The Palais Schaumburg in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a palace-like building that played a role in post-war German history. It served as the primary official residence of the Federal Chancellery and is now the second official residence of the Federal Chancellor.

History+

The origins of Palais Schaumburg lie in a city villa built between 1858 and 1860 for the Aachen cloth manufacturer Aloys Knops. By the end of the 19th century, the building acquired its current appearance through alterations and extensions. It owes its name to Prince Adolf zu Schaumburg-Lippe, who acquired the villa in 1894. After World War II, in 1949, Konrad Adenauer designated the Palais as the official residence of the Federal Chancellor. Over the following decades, it underwent renovations and expansions to meet the requirements of the Federal Chancellery. In 1976, it was replaced as the main seat of the Chancellery by a new building and was subsequently used for representative purposes. Since the relocation of the government seat to Berlin in 1999, Palais Schaumburg has served as the second official residence of the Federal Chancellery since May 2001.
