Stoclet Palace
The Palais Stoclet in Brussels is an extraordinary residence, built between 1905 and 1911 in the style of the Vienna Secession. It is considered an outstanding example of a total work of art, where architecture and interior design form a harmonious unity.
History+
The construction of the Palais Stoclet was commissioned by Adolphe Stoclet. Josef Hoffmann was responsible as the architect, working closely with the Wiener Werkstätte to realize a comprehensive artistic concept. Numerous Viennese artists, including Gustav Klimt, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Richard Luksch, contributed to the design. Klimt created the famous Stoclet Frieze for the dining room, developing its designs from 1905 and drawing them in original size in 1908. The execution of the frieze with mosaics began in 1909 and was completed in 1911 in Klimt's presence. Noble materials such as Norwegian Turili marble for the facade and Italian Paonazzo marble for the interiors were used for the construction. The Belgian artist George Minne and Fernand Khnopff also participated with sculptures and drawings. Since 2009, the Palais Stoclet has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
