The palace was built in 1848 by the then jewelry manufacturer Güllich from Pforzheim as a residence. In 1887, Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis bought the property. In 1915, the palace passed to the city of Bregenz and was used as official housing for high-ranking officials.
