Törring-Jettenbach Palace

The Palais Toerring-Jettenbach is a former city palace on Max-Joseph-Platz opposite the Königsbau of the Munich Residenz in the northeastern old town of Munich.

The Rococo palace was built between 1747 and 1754 by Ignaz Anton Gunetzrhainer for Count Ignaz von Törring. The show side was the west facade on Residenzstraße, designed in the Rococo style, with its central risalit. The interior of the four-winged palace was designed by Gunetzrhainer's brother Johann Baptist, and the stucco work was done by Johann Baptist Zimmermann.

In the course of the construction of the Königsbau of the Residenz, located opposite to the north, modeled after Florentine Renaissance palaces from 1825 onwards, a Florentine columned hall was in turn added to the palace by Leo von Klenze, and the palace itself was converted into the main post office between 1836 and 1839. The frescoes of horse tamers in the columned hall are by Johann Georg Hiltensperger.

During the Second World War, large parts of the palace, including the Rococo facade, were destroyed. After the end of the war, from 1950 onwards, the Residenzstraße front was rebuilt with a changed design, featuring a sweeping staircase and porthole windows.

After the post office moved out in 2009, all parts of the building not under monument protection were demolished, while Klenze's completely preserved arcaded walkway was incorporated into the new building. The also preserved east facade on Hofgraben will only be minimally altered. Original plans envisioned the building being used as a luxury hotel, but there is a preliminary building permit for both the hotel and an office variant. Completion was planned for 2011.
