Trauttmansdorff Palace

The Palais Trauttmansdorff is a former Graz city palace located in Bürgergasse, Burggasse, and Trauttmansdorffgasse in the Innere Stadt district.

In 1525, one of the two houses in Bürgergasse, from which the Palais Trauttmansdorff later emerged, was owned by a Trauttmansdorff. The second was finally acquired in 1614 by Sigmund Friedrich von Trauttmansdorff. He was also responsible for combining the two houses into a city palace between 1615 and 1620. After Count Alois Trauttmansdorff purchased the Palais Herberstein in Burggasse, the Palais Trauttmansdorff became the largest city palace in Graz at the time. The late Renaissance-style facade underwent a Baroque transformation around 1720. After an interior renovation in 1850 by master builder Georg Lindner, it was subsequently rented out.

A bomb hit during World War II destroyed a wing on November 1, 1944. The portal and the Madonna statue, which was placed in a niche and commissioned by Count Maximilian Trauttmansdorff, remained intact. It is now located in Dornau near Leobersdorf. After the sale of the palace in 1983, the building began to decay. Following a renovation in 1989, commissioned by the owner, the ÖRAG Group, the premises are currently occupied by offices, commercial spaces, and the Grazer Kunstverein.
