Welsersheimb Palace

The construction of the Palais began in 1689 and was completed in 1694 under the direction of Joachim Carlone for the war paymaster Count Sigmund von Stubenberg. The building plot, along which the city wall once ran, was provided to him by the Styrian estates. After the death of Count Wolfgang von Stubenberg, Count Josef von Welsersheimb acquired the property and gave it its current name. The Welsersheimb family retained ownership of the Palais until 1956. Following the demolition of the Graz city fortifications, the family acquired the adjacent landscape bastion and had a terraced garden laid out. Around 1812, Louis Bonaparte, a brother of Napoleon, temporarily resided in the Palais.
