Wertl von Wertlsberg Palace

A copper engraving from 1635 shows the building, then known as “Mariahilferhaus,” which was transformed by the Wertl family into a four-wing structure with three corner towers. After the merchant family Wertl was ennobled in the third quarter of the 17th century, they adopted the name Wertl von Wertlsberg. In 1696, Count Josef Wilhelm Kronegg acquired the palace and had an adjacent house demolished for an expansion. He converted the attic into a third floor and gave the polygonal corner towers their current appearance. From 1708, the new owner, Regimentsrat von Pureib, rented the palace to nobles.
