Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace)

The origins of the Doge's Palace date back to the 9th century when, after the relocation of the Doge's seat from Malamocco, a first wooden castle was built on the current site. This, along with the predecessor of St. Mark's Basilica, was destroyed by fire in 976. Following further fire damage, a fundamental new construction began under Doge Pietro Ziani. A first representative palace was erected under Doge Sebastiano Ziani, featuring three wings around an inner courtyard. Due to a significant increase in the membership of the Great Council, particularly after the Serrata of 1297, an expansion of the assembly halls became necessary. From 1340, under Doge Bartolomeo Gradenigo, a comprehensive redesign began, giving the palace its current Gothic form. The south wing facing the Bacino was completed first, followed by the wing facing the Piazzetta and the imposing Porta della Carta. After several devastating fires in the 15th and 16th centuries, the palace was consistently rebuilt according to the original plans, while the interiors were adapted to contemporary tastes. Following the end of the Republic of Venice, the palace housed various institutions and underwent extensive restoration in the late 19th century. Since 1923, it has been open to the public as a museum.
