The Pantheon in Rome stands as an outstanding testament to ancient Roman architecture and is considered one of the best-preserved structures of its era. It impresses with its monumental dome, which for over 1700 years was the largest in the world, and has served as a Catholic church since the 7th century.
History+
The origins of the Pantheon date back to the time of Agrippa, who had a predecessor building erected on the same site between 27 and 25 BC. This earlier temple, dedicated to Augustus, burned down in 80 AD and was rebuilt under Emperor Domitian, before again falling victim to a fire in 110 AD. The Pantheon visible today was built under Emperor Hadrian, presumably between 118 and 125 AD. Originally conceived as a sanctuary for all the gods of Rome, it was converted into a Christian church by Pope Boniface IV in 609 AD and dedicated to Saint Mary. Over the centuries, the structure underwent various changes, including the removal of bronze plates by Emperor Constans II in the 7th century and the erection of a bell tower in the 13th century, which was later demolished. The removal of bronze for cannons and the ciborium of St. Peter's Basilica under Pope Urban VIII in the 17th century is also noteworthy.
